One final win for the Brooklin Redmen will wrap up first place

Team eyes top spot in Major Series Lacrosse standings

WHITBY — The Brooklin Redmen will close out the Major Series Lacrosse campaign Wednesday night with as meaningful a regular season game as they’ve played in recent memory.

With the team sitting second place in the standings, one point back of the Six Nations Chiefs, a Redmen win would leapfrog them into top spot, thus earning home-floor advantage through the league playoffs and into the Mann Cup.

Not many, if any, would have thought that possible at the outset of the season, but it is a definite reality as the 5-7-1 Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks visit Iroquois Park Sports Centre for the season finale.

Redmen coach and general manager Wayne Colley said it’s been a pretty pleasing process to see things come together for his relatively young team, buoyed by another year of scoring exploits out of Shawn Williams, some great goaltending from Aaron Bold and leadership from the likes of captain Derek Suddons and others.

“Right now we’re working hard which is a good thing and we do have the opportunity to move on because we’ve beat everybody,” Colley said.

Now as satisfying as it would be for the Redmen to stake claim to first in the league — they’ve already wrapped up first in the East and an opening-round playoff bye — Colley and crew eye bigger things.

The Whitby Warriors will host the Minto Cup later this summer and the Redmen would love nothing more than to pair that up with a Mann Cup.

“At the end of the year you want to win the last game you play and that’s the Mann Cup. You don’t win the last game you’re playing, you don’t win nothing. You build towards that. Every series is going to be a seven-game series. It’s not a one-game knockout or anything. It’s a race to four wins in the semifinals first and you can’t look past that,” Colley said.

“It would be nice to have the Minto Cup here and the Mann Cup here,” he added.
